There are a lot of donkeys, but you can meet friends - Part 1

ISLAND ROADS WITHOUT Eric Brownlee, Canada, I have begun to feel that in Nairobi, I spend too much time, despite the fact that permanently somewhere to leave. In the end, decided to go to the coast. I have heard many good things about the island of Lamu, which is located in northern Kenya, and as Maria and Soren (German couple from a nearby camp) were going to go there through Mombasa (the second largest city in Kenya, approx. Perevi.), I too decided to join them. We bought train tickets in first class, the cost of which includes dinner and breakfast. Had to get there as much as 15 hours, the train goes at night and arrives in Mombasa at 9:30 am. In each of the compartments are relatively comfortable beds, a sink and a fan that did not work, and no wonder, because this car was already 50 years old. The train was supposed to go from the station at seven o'clock in the evening. I was lying on the bottom shelf when I heard the announcement of the administration. It was 6:30. I thought that I was lucky, because now not have to contend with nocturnal hitchhiking strangers. My joy lasted exactly until the moment that appeared in the doorway, Ben, a guy foot tall, shiny with sweat on his stomach in an unbuttoned shirt and colorful with a bottle of beer in each hand. Talking, he caught his mouth air, so I could hardly understand what he was saying. And he told me that in traffic jams, and he had to flee from the city center, with the streets of Ngong Road, because otherwise it would be too late. So began a long conversation with one of the most annoying fans to talk with whom I have ever met. He was just one of those people with whom you can communicate on the same topic, and they interrupt the interlocutor in mid-sentence and start talking about something completely different. In the end, I pretended to be asleep, and so have lasted until the signal for dinner. I was very pleased with the fact that Maria and Soren have been with us in a dining car, because I have a chance to talk to someone sane, even if only a couple of hours. After some time they looked at me as if asking: "What happened to this guy?" To this question I have no answer. Station in Nairobi in the morning we felt that with the rising sun has risen and the humidity - we were approaching the coast of the Indian Ocean. All this is very different from the relative coolness that envelops us in the morning in Nairobi. Railway - the best way to get to Mombasa, at least for the morning landscape. The train is much slower than the bus, but it passes through the East and West Tsavo National Park, where you can directly from the window to see a lot of wild animals, including elephants and giraffes. I'm not very lucky, I did not see anything, but it was still beautiful. The view from the train window Maria, Soren and I sat down at the station in a taxi, which was to take us to the bus station, where two hours later, the flight to Lamu. Along the way we were stopped by a police officer, who for some reason our car checked out, and then asked the driver to get out. Ten minutes passed, no less, after which the police went to the back door, beside which sat Mary, opened it and said: "Move over." She clearly said: "No! No way! "But in the end, he's still a policeman, he was able to get into the car. Fortunately for us, the officer just wanted to free ride and not take a bribe from us that Kenya is not uncommon. Soren and Marie Reaching the bus station, we were very surprised when we saw where our friends Tanya and Brian, who came here from the city of Amboseli to sit it on a bus. Small world. I had an aisle seat, this in itself was very nice, as was the opportunity to sit in a comfortable position. But I do not take into account the fact that in Kenya, then it was winter, and the chances that someone from the local least briefly open a window when it's only 30 degrees, almost was not. In general, it was a long trip to the stuffiness and potholes, and has air conditioning in the cabin could only dream of. List facilitating factors consisted of one item - I myself was in the player. Shelah Getting out of the bus, we all sat on the ferry, but on another bank on the island of Lamu, we met a few friends (Joe, Prasanna and Paul). Right reunion for some! Besides, all very well matched, since Mary that day was his birthday. At this addition to our company did not end, because Maria and Soren have agreed to meet with another couple with whom they met, until I went to the National Park Hells Gate. Unfortunately, Paul had to miss dinner due to ill health. And Joe the day before, decided to try some African dish (cow intestine), but his body was from this idea is not thrilled. Read more:
