CHERNOBYL: THE PAST OR FUTURE? Eyck Dallof and Emma Holmbro When we planned where we go this summer, one of the main reasons we chose the Ukraine, was Chernobyl - the worst place a nuclear technological disaster in history. As a tourist destination is the place in general is unique. Chernobyl - the only place in the world where you can enjoy a guided tour of the region, which suffered serious radiation and was transformed into a restricted zone. The word "enjoy", which was used in the preceding sentence, no irony in itself does not carry. Chernobyl, in fact, devastated, but at the same time, he shockingly beautiful. Center of Pripyat To get to Chernobyl, you must obtain a special permit. The easiest way to get it, if you go there with the tour. Travel agency will issue permission, free of charge. Of course, you can go to Chernobyl, and myself, but then all questions will have to decide for himself. The trip started in the Ukrainian capital. On the way from Kiev to the scene they showed us a very interesting documentary about the Chernobyl disaster. This film tells the background of what we were about to see. The disaster occurred April 26, 1986. In the fourth reactor, which is also known as "Chernobyl 4", held some kind of verification, in what has been disabled for security. Something went wrong in the reactor started a chain reaction that caused the huge explosion that destroyed the reactor and a partially destroyed building unit. In a reactor as neutron moderators used graphite. The explosion of graphite kindled, and a few moments started a large fire. The third and fourth reactors signal the start of the fire entered the local fire station, after some time firefighters arrived at the scene. They were trained to fight the fire, but the danger posed by a fire at a nuclear reactor, they knew almost nothing. There was a fire in the reactor itself, and the smoke from the fire was highly radioactive. The explosion also damaged the reactor core. There has been a release of radioactive material from the core into the surrounding space. Firefighters who battled the fire within minutes received a lethal dose. For several days they all died from acute radiation sickness. The explosion of the reactor and subsequent fire occurred at night. Some residents of the nearby city of Pripyat are interested in going on and went to the railway bridge, which is located near the reactor in order to better look at the fire. The bridge is located on a hill, and people were clearly seen as a raging fire in the power of half a kilometer away from them. But they could not see what the active zone has been destroyed, and the radiation spread in all directions. On the bridge, the radiation level was high enough to ensure that those who stood there for quite some time, received a lethal dose. A few days later most of those who were on the bridge, died of acute radiation sickness. Subsequently, the bridge was nicknamed "the Bridge of Death." "Bridge of Death" After the explosion the reactor core, for obvious reasons, went out of control. This led to the complete destruction and release large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Despite this, the NPP leadership has refused to acknowledge the catastrophe. At first they tried to hush up the whole thing. When in the nearby settlements began to spread rumors about the catastrophe, the plant's management has acknowledged the accident, but claimed the situation under control. This statement apparently was to reassure local residents, but misled them, because the situation is actually a long time got out of control. The reactor was completely destroyed, there was a powerful release of radioactive material from the core into the atmosphere. Read more:
