Record of a tsunami wave height

HIGHEST WAVE TSUNAMI What happened? The largest in the history of the wave of the tsunami was recorded in the Gulf of Lita, which is located in the U.S. state of Alaska, on a narrow strip of U.S. territory, "pressed" to the Pacific Ocean, Canada. The evening of July 9, 1958 as a result of the earthquake and landslide in the fault Feyrveze from the rocks on the northeast coast of the Gulf in the water dropped 30.6 Stepanavan cubic meters of solid rock. This huge mass of rock fell into the water from a height of approximately 910 meters in the Bay of Hilbert's south-west coast which was subjected to shock the most powerful tsunami resulting from the disaster. Strike wave was so strong that the element actually destroyed a strip of land, scythe La Gauss, which separates the bay from the rest of the Gulf of Lita. Wave then went further along the entire length of the bay, through the shallows of La Gauss and invaded the Gulf of Alaska. A powerful blow to the mass of water destroyed all vegetation up to a height of 524 meters above sea level. Millions of trees were uprooted and washed away. This wave is a record height of its front in the entire history of observations. Bay Lita is a fairly narrow strip of water on the northeast coast of the Gulf of Alaska. Near the shores of the bay water surface is covered with ice. The length of the Gulf of 11,3 km and the width of 3,2 km. The maximum depth is 219 meters, but on the isthmus that separates the lagoon from the ocean to the bottom almost by hand - just 9.7 meters. The line connects the top of the Isthmus of La Gauss Spit to Cape Point Harbor. Feyrveze fault runs along the north-eastern tip of the Gulf of Lita, and together with a strip of the Gulf form the T-shaped depression of the earth's surface. Under the influence of centuries-old glacier movement along the relatively small area of ??the fault formed groove, known as depression Feyrveze. Lita glacier and the glacier of the Northern Grillona filled with ice Feyrveze depression, which then goes to the south-west along the Gulf of Lita. In places where the glacier and the glacier Lita Northern Grillona come to the surface waters are located, respectively, Gilbert Bay and the bay Grillona. What happened July 9, 1958? That evening, a huge rock struck the water with a steep cliff overlooking the northeastern coast of the bay Hilbert. Area of ??collapse is marked on the map in red. Beat the incredible mass of stone with a very high altitude caused the unprecedented tsunami, which wiped out all living creatures that were all over the coast of the Gulf of Lita up to spit la Gauss. After passage of the wave on both sides of the bay is left not only vegetation, but even the soil on the surface of the shore was bare rock. The damaged area is shown on the map in yellow. The figures along the shores of the bay indicate the height above sea level edge of the damaged section of land and approximately the height of the transmitted wave here. Testimonies Mr. Howard J. Ulrich on his yacht, called "Edri, entered the waters of the Gulf of Lita about eight pm and is anchored to the penalty deep in a small cove on the southern coast. Howard said that the boat suddenly began to swing strongly. He ran out on deck and saw the north-eastern Gulf of rock began to move because of the earthquake and the water was going down a huge lump of rock. After about two and a half minutes after the quake, he heard a deafening sound of destruction of rock. "We just saw that the tide has gone from Gilbert Bay, just before the earthquake is over. But first, it was not a wave. At first it was more like an explosion, as if the glacier was split into parts. Wave grew out of the water surface, at first it almost was not clear who would have thought that, then the water will rise to half a kilometer high. "Ullrich said that he had watched the whole process of development of the wave, which reached their yacht for a very short time - something about two and a half or three minutes, as long as its the first time can be seen. Since we do not want to lose an anchor, we are fully etched anchor chain (approximately 72 meters) and run the engine. Halfway between the north-eastern edge of the Gulf of Lita and the island Cenotaph could see a wall of water tridtsatimetrovoy height, which stretched from one bank to another. When the wave came in the northern part of the island, it was divided into two parts, but after passing the southern part of the island, the wave has again become a single entity. It was smooth, only the top was a small comb. When this mountain of water came up to our boat, its front was pretty cool, and its height was 15 to 20 meters. Before the wave came to a place where our boat, we did not feel any decrease in water or other changes, except mild vibration which transferred the water from the tectonic processes that began operation during the earthquake. As a wave approached us and started to lift our boat, anchor chain rattled heavily. Yacht suffered towards the south coast and then to reverse the wave toward the center of the bay. The top of the wave was not very wide, from 7 to 15 meters, and the trailing edge was less steep than the front. When a giant wave swept past us, the surface of the water returned to its normal level, but we could see around the boat a lot of turbulent eddies and chaotic waves of six-meter height, which moved from one birch bay to another. These waves do not form any appreciable movement of water from the mouth of the bay to the north-eastern part and vice versa. 25 ... 30 minutes, the surface calm bay. Near the coast could see a lot of logs, branches and uprooted trees. All this stuff slowly drifted toward the center of the Gulf of Lita and his mouth. In fact, during the whole incident, Ulrich has not lost control of the yacht. When the 11 pm "Edri" came to the entrance of the bay, it was possible to observe the normal flow, which is usually caused by the daily tide of ocean water. Other witnesses of the disaster, the couple Swenson on a yacht called the "Badger", entered the Gulf of Lita around nine in the evening. First, their boat approached the island Cenotaph and then returned to Anchorage Bay on the north shore of the bay, near its mouth (see map). Swenson anchored at a depth of about seven feet and went to sleep. Son of William Swenson was interrupted due to excessive vibration of the yacht. He ran into the control cabin and began clocking occurs. A little over a minute from the time when William first felt the vibration, and probably before the end of the earthquake, he looked toward the north-eastern Gulf, which had been obscured by the island's Cenotaph. Traveler saw something that he first took over the glacier Lita, who "took off and began moving toward the observer. "It seemed that the mass is solid, but she jumped and swayed. In front of this boulder in the water fell steadily large chunks of ice. " After a short time "glacier has disappeared from view, and instead of him in that place there was a big wave and went in the direction of the spit La Gauss, just where was anchored our boat." In addition, Swenson pointed out that the wave flooded the coast at a very appreciable height. When the wave passed the island Cenotaph, its height was about 15 meters in the center of the bay, and gradually decreased near the coast. It passed the island in about two and a half minutes after that it can be seen for the first time and reached the yacht "Badger" has eleven and a half minutes (approx). Before the arrival of waves of William, as well as Howard Ulrich, have not noticed any decrease in water level or some turbulent phenomena. Yacht "Badger", which still stood at anchor, raised a wave and carried away the spit la Gauss. Feed yacht at the same time was below the crest of the wave, so that the position of the vessel resembled a surfboard. Swanson looked at this point to the spot where they were supposed to be visible to the trees that grow on the spit la Gauss. At that moment they were hidden by water. William noted that over the tops of the trees there is a layer of water, roughly equal to two lengths of his boat, about 25 meters. Having her hair La Gaussian wave very quickly went into decline. At the point where there was a yacht Swenson, the water level began to fall and the ship hit the bottom of the bay, staying afloat off the coast. 3-4 minutes after the impact Swanson saw that the water continues to flow over oblique La Gauss, carrying logs and other debris of forest vegetation. He was not sure if this was not the second wave, which could move the boat through her hair in the Gulf of Alaska. Therefore, the wife of Swanson left his yacht, moved to a small boat with which they were found by a fishing boat a couple of hours later. During the incident in the Gulf of Lita was the third vessel. It was anchored at the entrance to the bay, and was sunk by a huge wave. None of the people aboard survived, presumably killed two men. Studies on fresh tracks before you place the events described here, an employee of the U.S. Geological Survey Don Miller collected eyewitness accounts of similar disasters in the Gulf of Lita. He has documented at least four cases of large waves that could be seen here long before July 1958. Presumably, similar to the tsunami took place here in 1936, 1899, 1874 and 1853 (or 1854) years. All these waves were quite high altitude, but traces of their influence on the shores of the bay were eliminated July wave of 1958. Miller was in Alaska, where in the Gulf of Lita tsunami, and arrived at the disaster site immediately the next day, which gave him the opportunity to explore fresh traces of the phenomenon. Miller, in his report concluded that in the Gulf of Lita conditions exist for a tsunami several times per century. Interestingly, when the same happens next?
