VOLYUBILIS - Roman city in North Africa Volyubilis - it is an archaeological site in Morocco. It is located near the city of Meknes, which is located between the cities of Fez and Rabat. The easiest way to get here - is to use the highway number 13, located near the town of Moulay Idris. This cultural monument, which in 1997 became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes the most well preserved ancient ruins in this part of North Africa. These remains of the Roman period are unique and known for its mosaics, which in Morocco found nowhere else. Ancient Mosaic. The Labours of Hercules in this ancient city is located on the western border of the Roman Empire and was the most important Roman city in the region. The settlement arose in the place where previously there was a city that belonged to Carthage. Volyubilis was the administrative center of the Roman province Mavretaniya Tingitanskaya. On the fertile lands of the province grew wheat, olives, olive oil is made, which is then exported to Rome. Trade contributed to the rapid development and prosperity of the province. Unlike most Roman settlements in the Mediterranean region, not Volyubilis was abandoned after the invasion of Arabs. Triumphal arch While many architectural monuments in Volyubilise reminiscent of the grandeur of the Roman Empire had been destroyed, there still remained 30 magnificent mosaics, and numerous columns, basil and a triumphal arch. It was erected in honor of the Edict of Caracalla (Roman emperor Caracalla's decree 212, giving Roman citizenship to all free people of the empire, ca. TRANSFER), and was formerly surmounted by a bronze chariot, set on a stone foundation. The Arch was restored in 1962. Natural hill in Volyubilise rises above the surrounding plains.
