Jumping on an elastic rope - a centuries-old custom - part 2

AMAZING TRADITION Islanders Pentecost (continued, part 2) So what are the rules and limitations exist in this ceremony? And again, the first and most important - this time holding. From March to May, to climber managed to reach the desired condition. The second - the tower should be built on a hillside at its top, to jumpers flying down the hill. When the jumper jumps and is 3 meters from the ground, the vine is pulled to its full length and pulls his body back so that it lands precisely on his chest. If the tower is not located on a hill, the jumper would not be the place to dive and bounce back. Third - women should not take part in the construction of towers, the preparation of a hill, and in general in everything connected with this ceremony. Normally, they are not even allowed to be present during the ceremony (but "white" of both sexes to look at the jumps are not forbidden). Fourth - the men (and often boys, who for 10 years!) Is not allowed to eat the day before jumping. It may well be explained (the ratio of body weight and tensile strength of vines, hops are selected for special vines, depending on the weight of men). Men are also forbidden to spend the night before jumping to women (dinner, love joy ... everything is forbidden). The fifth - in the countryside is a man who is considered an expert on jumps, his opinion is crucial. He checks the tower climbers, platforms, male stars, but all in a row ... and if he suddenly something does not seem relevant "standards", he says: "No, do not jump" - and nobody will be jumping. I have heard that there were 2 cases (one of them was my distant cousin), when the jumpers are not listened to the expert, and both died. Either the platform broke down or could not stand climber. Sixth - definitely need to dance a traditional dance. There are special songs to sing, dance must be performed in a certain style. When the dancers (all men and boys) reach a certain point in the song, the diver begins to bend back and look at the sky, stretching their hands up as if praying to God to open the mind, heart and soul. All this happens just before the jump. Customs that surround the ceremony, just wonderful, incredibly complex and beautiful. Observers on the ground, where the ceremony, you can see dozens of men and boys. They absolutely have no clothes, except for leaves, which they wrap their penises. Leaves are supported vine wrapped around his waist. Many people decorate their hair and biceps leaves. In this part of the ceremony are eligible to participate, even boys who are over 5 years, while men over age 60 participate only in the songs and dances. This group is satisfied with ritual dances around the tower on a hilltop. At each of the 5 areas of the tower is located on one person. The youngest participants in the ceremony jump from the lowest platform, and most respected community members can jump from the top sites. With each jump site for two people, only five such sites. Jumper gets on its platform and is suitable to its edge. Ritual dances and chants in the meantime continuing at the base of the tower. The jumper is on the platform and look straight ahead. After about a minute, at one point chanting, diver spreads his hands apart, removes the leaves from the waist and arms and they began to swing so that his hands remained perpendicular to the body. He waves his arms, was rejected back, arching his back, sometimes covering her face turned toward the sky. When he feels that he is ready to make a jump, it produces leaves, first from one arm, then from another, and jumps as far as possible. When a brave man is three meters from the surface, or can even closer, the rope tightens and you can hear the creaking of tension wood construction of the tower. Arms folded, a diver hits the ground. He is assisted by a person who is on the ground, which cuts the rope, having tied around his ankles. Soon jumper joins the dancers. Then the tower rises boy. This is a stunner. We even feel one with the participants of the ceremony and were pleased that we have the opportunity to see it the way it always happens, without much glitz and crowds of tourists. Dance This ceremony has become so well known that many tourists dream to come to the island and see it with my own eyes. I can understand them. Residents of Pentecost very quickly realized that the ceremony in a show can make good money. Unfortunately, since the tourist attraction ceremony turned into a real circus. Tourists began to sell all sorts of trinkets, food and even beer. Once on Pentecost this ceremony is practiced in many villages, it now occurs in only three. Today, tourists arrive on an island in the morning to buy beer and boiled corn, watch a two-hour ceremony and returned to Port Vila, just in time to catch a massage and watch rugby on TV. Villagers who had participated in the ceremony, rather abruptly withdrawn as the commercialization of the rite, and of those who continue to participate in the ceremony for the money. I can understand them. Me as a newcomer is very interested in the lives of other people, and I would gladly pay to see the ceremony. But unfortunately, today, jumping from the tower did not have anything in common with traditional rites and is solely for the money. Very sorry.
