GOLDEN TREASURE VARNA Golden Treasure of Varna - the greatest archaeological discovery made near the sea capital of Bulgaria. In fact, this is the biggest "fossil" collection of gold objects that ever fell into the hands of scientists. In addition, it is the oldest gold found in Europe, and today it belongs to the so-called culture of Varna. These treasures were discovered by accident when in these places laid telephone cable. The first finds benefited from the land within five hundred meters to the north of Lake Varna and four kilometers west from the center of the city. The vast treasure consists of more than 3000 golden objects found in 294 graves scattered across the territory in 7500 square meters. One of the most valuable finds - the tomb of the ruler or priest finds total weight of 6 kilograms. Gold in these locations were found in 1972, and subsequent archaeological work led to one of the greatest historical discoveries in the world - the tomb and treasures of gold, buried between the end of the fourth - the beginning of the fifth century. The excavations also discovered an ancient necropolis, belonging more to the Chalcolithic Age. Inside found a lot of pottery, tools made of stone and flint objects of bronze and ivory, as well as many ornaments of gold and shells. The oldest golden treasures of the richest discoveries include so-called "grave number 43". There was discovered the skeleton of a man growing 170-172 cm, who died at the age of 40-50 years. He was dressed in an expensive, lavishly embroidered clothing, and this has led scientists to conclude that a man in his lifetime was a priest or ruler. Scientists of the Archaeological Museum of Varna in his research concluded that an important dignitary died a violent death. In his tomb were found 990 gold ornaments whose total weight is 1.5 pounds. In his right hand, broken in the elbow, was a scepter, a symbol of power. Neck governor three threads adorned with 890 gold beads, which weigh 499 grams. His clothes were embroidered with gold plates, and on his head - a delightful tiara. To the left of the men was lying bow. In addition to these royal subjects in a grave found many bronze and stone objects: a copper ax, chisel, awl, needle, sharp knives and a pot. Total in the grave were found more than 850 gold objects. Their appearance led to the assumption that the people of that time were pagans. Their gods they represented as the embodiment of animals, in particular, several "divine character" referred to the cattle. Thus, the gold plates depicting cows, bulls or their heads with horns. Today, the greatest archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century can be seen in six rooms of the Archaeological Museum in Varna. There are a few graves, and all the treasures found in them.
