Divided into two countries - Part 1

GOLF COURSES, CHURCHES AND meze Janet Dore, USA My husband Lance had the unique opportunity to read the course of a qualitative assessment of the yacht clubs and golf courses for one of the departments of the Government of Cyprus. This trip seemed much more interesting than the usual boring business trip, and I decided to join her husband and go to this historic journey. Both our children were too small to survive more than 24-hour flight to a country that for their fragile minds is not an entirely no interest (in other words, there is no roller coaster, hamburgers, pizza, video games, etc. ), so we had to invite my grandmother, who watch over them. When we got to Cyprus, my joy from visiting this Mediterranean country, only increased. Cyprus has been inhabited as far back as 8500 BC. Then, there lived the hunter-gatherers who arrived from the neighboring continents. Long before Christ was born of Cyprus is constantly passed from hand to hand many of the conquerors. Among the invaders were the Hittites and the Egyptians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Assyrians and Persians. Conquered the country and the Romans, as without them. The long list goes on and on. "Notes" here the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, Ottomans and finally the British. Only in 1960 was founded the Republic of Cyprus. (Those who wish to learn more about how Cypriots fought the British rule, I recommend reading the book Lawrence Durrell "Bitter Lemons"). However, even the attainment of independence did not end the political controversy. In 1974 Turkey invaded the island and established the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus, which since 1983 is known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The boundary of the Republic of Turkey is right in the center of the capital city of Nicosia, so the city is the only world capital of the state, divided into two opposing armies. Following the recent decision of Cyprus to the European Union, Turkey also wished to become part of greater Europe, so there is still hope that the last political obstacle will finally be eliminated. Meanwhile, the Cypriots have to wait Hotel Roman Hotel "We have started its journey in October 2005 during the trips you can always learn something, especially when organizing a tour through the Internet. Our first lesson is that the three capital letters in parentheses for information on the route actually mean something. Now I know that means LHR London Heathrow Airport, and LGW - London Gatwick Airport, and that these two airports are located from one another about an hour's bus ride away. We arrived at Gatwick Airport for 15 minutes before landing at our Cyprus trip. Usually I'm not so happy with visiting English speaking countries, but this time I'm almost sure we'll be late for our plane, if we have trouble with their luggage. Our room in "Roman Hotel" on board the aircraft, which went to Cyprus, it was a lot of families from England. All of them flew into the holidays. For them, this island is a popular destination since before he was a British colony. Virtually all Cypriots not only speak in English but also in English drive a car (that is, to "correct" side of the road!). Personally, I liked to sit next to the charming British toddler. A few hours flight, I heard: "I have two windows," and "There's a little scary!" The English accent is something that makes even the speech of the little man sounds much more reasonable. Without him, I'm sure this mouthy kid would not be so sweet. This, too, Cyprus After knocking after departure from San Diego, we arrived in Paphos in pretty good spirits. It was about 9:00 pm. Thank God, in the tiny airport, it was impossible to get lost, and we literally stumbled upon a rack of rental cars. That's where we are taught a second lesson. Apparently, the "bait and switch" - is a common scheme of work at a local car rental business. I was surprised when a representative of our company has accrued nearly 150% from the top to the proposed reserved price, which I learned from the Internet. ("American Express" does not protect us from such things as good as I hoped, the next time will have to verify the information more carefully). All our luggage with difficulty together in a small car in Europe. Fortunately, a young man we have learned to drive a car equipped with a manual transmission. And here is intolerable to us Americans were shocked by the lack of the usual automatic transmission! (When I went to the bar, I felt that I definitely need to emphasize that although we Americans, but it is not like those who stood in front of us). Then Lance first tried to drive on the right side of the road, and begin to practice in the pitch darkness in a country full of ring intersections was, at least, excruciating. When we saw the light of the approaching headlights, my usually calm husband gripped with the full force of the steering wheel, and his face appeared tense expression. I have already begun to worry whether we will survive, will we see Cyprus and will we witness how our children grow up! Read more:
