River transport in Laos: the main thing - to get to your destination!

Uncomfortable WALK Shnitser Lucy, an artist early in the morning we (me and my boyfriend Andy) came together on a voyage on the Mekong River from Huay Ksay town in northern Laos. We wanted to get to the city of Luang Prabang the same day. To swim 150 kilometers along the river on a boat requires a half day, including breaks for meals. Contrary to the advice of the pamphlet "Lonely Planet" (one of the most popular in the West, travel guides, approx. Perevi.), We decided to take a boat because the owner of a hotel in Chiang Mai, where we stayed, we recommend this is the way to travel. Traveling on a big, slow river boat would take two days, and we would stay overnight in the port village of Pak Peng. Customs - adventure is about to begin! On the docks at Huay Ksay had a lot of people, and small boats now and then filled with passengers and sailed one after another. When landing on the boat we were in the tail of the queue and, when it stepped on board, quickly realized that made the wrong choice. The fact that low and narrow boat was just the same to the eyeballs packed with people, but coming back was not there. We set sail. The boat was flying on the water surface at great speed, sometimes up to 80 kilometers per hour, while we sat on hard benches, chins resting on knees. One passenger had to free space in the form of a rectangle 40 by 50 cm, or even less. After just half an hour of our bodies are numb, and we felt miserable creatures. We watched the beautiful scenery with music from the headphones, because the motor noise was just deafening. Passengers Lao also put on a helmet and life jacket, which gave them the "captain" boats. Buffaloes We were told that when the water in the river is low (and it was just so during our trip), an accident, when the boat come on to the sandy beach or sunken snag. Among the victims are mostly local residents who can not swim. Buy soft drinks at a gas station on the Mekong River. Nice cock, the pride of ownership filling squirting water fell on us clothes and we were soaked to the skin. The sun was shining and the air was warm, but I order chilled. Andy on his face was frozen, suffering expression for a man of impressive size is constrained by the situation was particularly unpleasant. And if you begin his usual brutal pain, it becomes not fun. And I had a problem - my left leg cramp, and I could not help it. Traditional wooden boats we were promised that would stop every hour. It seemed an eternity had passed when the boat finally stopped. We found that our legs finally "fell asleep", but Andy's right leg remained motionless for at least ten minutes. Fortunately, we made an extra stop, when there were some problems with the motor. We landed on the sandy beach, and our "captain" began to repair. We are only left to hope that he can not cope with it too quickly. Stepping on the golden sand and warming our bones patients, we have enjoyed their freedom. But then we started thinking about what we are unclear where, and we are surrounded by only one timber on both sides of river. If the "captain" will not be able to repair the engine, when it will arrive the next boat to save us? We did not bring any food! And how long will we have enough drinking water? Laotian hunter and his dog we saw two hunters, they walked along the crest of the mountain with guns on their shoulders. One of them carried on the shoulder of the carcass of a wild boar. He went ashore with his dog, threw a wild boar on the ground, paying no attention to us, undressed and went into the water. The dog was left to guard the boar, but do not resist the temptation, she began eagerly to bite him. When the man came out of the water, the terrible anger. The dog backed away, keeping its tail, waiting for its owner to calm down. Finally, the hunter took the boar and was accompanied by his four-legged friend went to catch up with his partner. Our boat finally our journey continued. Another hour's journey down the Mekong, and we reached the next stop, the port village of Pak Peng. We visited the idea of ??staying here to rest your weary limbs. When and how do we continue our journey - it will be seen. Travelers have every new day - it's an adventure!
